Strong, intelligent and truly captivating.
Maisie Dobbs is a private detective working in and around London, during a time where women were looked down upon for having independence. Her latest case leads her on a journey through the horrors of war, the effect it had on a soldiers mental and physical health. Little did she know, this journey was about to get personal…
During the start of World War One, an incredible young woman is given a unique opportunity. Maisie Dobbs is from a working-class family, her father strives to provide his intelligent, young daughter with a stable home, after the death of her mother. However, no matter his efforts, Maisie has to forfeit her dreams of an education to work for a local wealthy family as a maid. In the luxurious house, she is surrounded by an eccentric family who provide her with a chance for a better life, a tutor and a library she can use to study.
Unfortunately, her studies are interrupted by the start of WW1. Maisie, feeling guilty for her security in her studies, signs up to the war effort as a nurse. Along the way, she meets a handsome military doctor and a group of nursing friends that help her to fulfil her potential as a young woman, not just as an academic.
The characters within Winspear’s story are warm, relatable and easy to like. I was attracted to reading this book after reading Murder on the Orient Express. I wanted a mystery style novel, that felt old fashioned but was modern enough and easy to understand. The story of Maisie’s past unravels through her current case, so at points it can be a bit confusing if you are not concentrating! However, at the moment during lockdown it provided a perfect read. It was escapism at its finest and I was thrilled to be solving the case alongside Maisie. I can guarantee that you will see more of Miss Dobbs in my book reviews in the future.
Who would I recommend this book to:
· Mystery fans who love to solve crimes
· Admirers of romance – especially historical romance
· Crime readers who want a more relaxed read
